“Walter” Wladyslaw Henry Kacanowski Obituary

“Walter” Wladyslaw Henry Kacanowski , of Dyer, Indiana passed away February 13, 2024. He was born May 3, 1927 in Siensko, Poland, just north of Krakow. At 96 he lived a long and healthy life.


He loved music, sports and loved to dance. He was athletic. Walter was a Holocaust survivor. At the age of 15 he was taken by the German army at gunpoint during the night and put on a train to northern Germany where he was in a forced labor camp until the age of 18. He arrived in the US as a miss-placed person. Walter fell in love with Darlene Faye Lange of Chicago and they were happily married for 71 years. Darlene, the love of his life, passed away this past year on April 25, 2023. Walter was drafted into the US Army and sent to Soul Korea where he served 4 years as an Electrician in a MASH unit, came home and work the rest of his life as a IBEW local 134 electrician.


He is survived by his beloved children: Dave (Barb) Kacanowski, Jim (Karen) Kacanowski and Nancy (Doug) Mulder; 7 adored grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; numerous dear nieces and nephews.


An 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be officiated on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Our Lady of Knock Church: 501 163rd Street, Calumet City, IL  60409 followed by Interment Services at the chapel of Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery: 801 Michigan City Road, Calumet City IL 60409.
