SSND Associate Nun Barbara Jean Metzinger, age 84, of Chicago, Illinois, born September 25, 1938, left this earth peacefully on November 13, 2022. Her good friends believe that she was led to heaven by her adored saint, Mother Francis Cabrini, as it was Mother Cabrini’s feast day.
She is survived by her cat Buddy (the love of her life), her good friends Sherry, Cara and Lupita; sons Martin and Walter Lubawy; and grandson Cole (who she loved and adored very much from afar). She was preceded in death by her loving son Larry Lubawy, dear friend Delores Chivers and many others.
Barb loved the outdoors, drawing, nature, wildlife and camping. She had served as a Boy Scout leader, was a member of the World Wildlife Federation and loved to garden. She also was a dedicated registered nurse, taking this on as a career late in life. She graduated from St. Anne’s Hospital School of Nursing and worked at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital, welcoming many babies into the world as she worked in the obstetrical unit. There she gained her love for Mother Cabrini.
She met her good friend Sister Lupita at Corazon A Corazon School where she volunteered and helped children with their homework. She moved into the senior community at Roosevelt Place where she made many friends from St. Barbara’s and continued to grow plants on the back patio and took care of the library. She also loved to spend time watching Dr. Pol with her caregiver.
Funeral Services will be Monday, November 28, 2022 directly at St. Therese Chinese Catholic Church: 218 W Alexander St
Chicago, IL 60616 followed by Interment Services at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery.
Barb touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. Special thanks to The Resurrection Nursing Home. Memorial donations to Paws Chicago https://my.pawschicago.org/holidaygiving2022/Donate
