Linda P. Brooks-Petro (née Kay) Obituary

Linda P. Brooks-Petro (née Kay), age 77, of Whiting, Indiana; formerly of Shelby, MI went to her heavenly home November 22, 2022. She was born September 3, 1945 in Walnut Ridge, AR to James “Leonard” and Pearl L. (née Philput) Kay. Her family moved to Shelby, MI when Linda was 8 years old where she attended Piper School and eventually graduated from Shelby Public Schools.

Linda’s family ran Kay’s Restaurant in Shelby for several years where she was working as a cook. She met Ralph Brooks and they married in 1970 and moved to Calumet City, IL where she became a devoted wife and loving mother. She babysat for numerous children, while taking care of her own daughters, and has kept in touch with most of them throughout the years. She kept very busy being involved in whatever her children were doing. She was assistant leader for the Girl Scouts, and was involved in the Blue Jays and the PTA. She was a Tupperware demonstrator and held many parties for over 10 years. She worked for Avon Products for 45 years and won numerous awards for her extraordinary sales. She was Secretary for Dana Tank Lines for several years, where her husband worked. Sadly, her husband passed away in 2000.

After Ralph passed away, Linda went to work at Walmart where she met John Petro, married him in 2003 and moved to Whiting IN. She enjoyed totally redecorating their home. She finally had the opportunity to travel and often spoke about their wonderful trip touring out west. John passed away in 2011.

She was a member of Cornerstone Church, Schererville, IN and loved her church family. She was also a member of the American Baptist Women’s Association. She was an avid Cub’s fan and would drop everything to watch them on TV. While watching them, she would crochet beautiful afghans, baby sweaters, booties and hats for family and friends. Her hands were never idle. Linda was loved by so many. She had the knack for making friends very easily.

Linda is survived by her daughters Shannon (Ron) Kammer of Wheatfield, IN and Staci Brooks (Juan) of Whiting, IN; grandsons Cody (Danielle) Kammer and Colin (Jessica) Kammer; granddaughter Crystal (Jacob) Murray; great-grandchildren: Megan and Garrett Kammer; brother Terry (Ellen) Kay of Rockford, IL; sister Sharon (Louis) Robbins of Rothbury, MI; sister-in-law Cheryl (late Leon) Kay of Shelby, MI; aunts Mary Jane McAlee of Imboden, AR and Zella Simmons of Shelby, MI; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She also has left her special fur grand-dogs Scrappy and Lucky.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; her sister Nellie Mae Crossno of Rockford, IL and her brothers Bob and Leon Kay and Uncle John Simmons, all of Shelby, MI.
