Dennis Bonic Obituary

Dennis Bonic, formerly of Calumet City, Illinois passed away on January 2, 2024. Dennis lived most of his life in Calumet City, attending St. Victor School and Thornton Fractional North High School. He spent many years working at Rand McNally on the printing presses before becoming the Commissioner of the Water Department for the City of Calumet City. Dennis was mostly known from being the owner and operator of Maggie’s Tavern with his beloved wife Bonnie.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Dorothy (née Bissa) Bonic and his brother Stanley Bonic.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Bonnie (née Budzowski), and five children: Laura (Edward) Jakaitis, Denise Bonic, Amy (Scott) Nielsen, Brian (Kristine) Bonic and Robert. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Zack (Allison) Jakaitis, Maggie (Nicole) Jakaitis, Cody Seifert and Brady Bonic; great-grandson Braxton Malone. He also is survived by his brothers John (MaryAnn) Bonic, Terry Bonic, Marty (Donna) Bonic and his sister Joy Burgess.

Dennis was active with all his children and their activities at Saint Andrew the Apostle school, where he coached, along with Little League and Babe Ruth leagues. Dennis was a longtime member of the Calumet City Cavaliers, and an outstanding member of the community. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and fisherman. He was an accomplished baseball player in his youth, and enjoyed the game throughout his life. He loved cheering for his two favorite teams, the Cincinnati Reds, and whoever were playing the Chicago Cubs. But mostly, he enjoyed sitting around with his many friends and colleagues, telling his jokes and stories to anyone that would listen…and everyone would. Dennis leaves behind too many friends to begin to mention, but those closest friends from the bar, which was more like a community center to him, will miss him dearly. He was a legend in the world is a better place because of him. He will truly be missed.
