Anthony Zendian Obituary

In Loving Memory of Anthony Zendian

Anthony Zendian, age 97, of Schererville, IN, formerly of Calumet City, IL, passed away peacefully at 12:45 a.m. on August 22, 2025, in Merrillville, IN.

Born on June 18, 1928, in Calumet City, IL, Anthony was the beloved son of Anton and Bernice (née Spyro) Zendzian. He grew up in a large, loving family and, following the tragic loss of his father in childhood, stepped up as the man of the house to help care for his mother and eight siblings—a testament to his strength, compassion, and unwavering sense of responsibility.

Anthony honorably served in the United States Coast Guard during WWII and later retired from Rand McNally, where he was known for his dedication and work ethic. A lifelong resident of Calumet City before moving to Schererville, Anthony was deeply rooted in his community and faith. He was an active member of St. Andrew’s Church, where he also served as Vice President of the Senior Sunshine Club for ten years.

He is survived by his loving sister Evelyn Brewer as well as his loving children, Timothy (Karen) and Toni; cherished grandchildren, Jamie, Megan (Rick), Anthony, and Nicole; and precious great-grandchild, Rylee. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Rita (née Rucinski) Zendian, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership.

Anthony found joy in life’s simple pleasures—working in the yard, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He had a particular fondness for sweets and baked goods, always paired with a piping hot cup of coffee. He was athletic, hardworking, and endlessly supportive of his family and friends. His sweet soul, open heart, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Truly, no one could say a bad word about him.

Please contact the family for further details.

Anthony’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and kindness. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
