Joseph C. Craig

Joseph C. Craig 70, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 29th, 2017 at Riley House Hospice in Munster, Indiana. He was surrounded with love and care by family and friends in his final days.

Joe was born on June 19th, 1947 in Michigan City, Indiana to parents Joseph and Evelyn (Stafford) Craig. Joey was an outstanding student in science, geography, and mathematics, and an accomplished athlete in Football and Track & Field. He had a sense of humor, charisma, and warm-heartedness that brought joy and laughter to those around him.

He married June E. (Tiller) Craig on December 27th, 1992, and with her had two sons Jeffrey Michael and Jonathan Charles. Joe was a teacher in the Hammond City school system for more than 40 years and was nationally recognized for his innovative work with at-risk students, encouraging them to succeed in the classroom and grow as individuals. He touched the hearts of many throughout his life and career.

Joe is survived by his wife June, sons Jeff and Jon, sister Evie (wife of Tom Sizemore) Craig, sister-in-law Barbara Craig, nieces Sharon and Julie Craig, great niece Cierra Strawder, and former wife Elaine (Krasowski) Craig. He was preceded in death by his parents and two beloved brothers, Michael and Richard. Joe was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran in Michigan City, and was an active member at Trinity Lutheran in Lansing, Illinois.

A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church: 1237 Coolspring Ave, Michigan City, IN Saturday, November 25th at 11 AM. Memorial donations may be made to the Riley House Hospice in Munster, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Michigan City, in Joe’s memory.
