Erwin George Bircher

Erwin G. Bircher, age 78, of Hobart, Indiana passed away Sunday, March 10, 2024. He was born to Fredrick and Helena (née Sheahan) Bircher on January 7, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois. He leaves behind a legacy marked by dedication, service, and love.

Erwin is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Jean (née Ernst) Bircher and his first wife Justine, whom he was married to from 1967-1991. Erwin was preceded in death by his second wife, Carol L. (née Spears) Bircher, whom he was married to from 1992 until the time of her passing in 2012.

He was also preceded in death by his brother Fred Bircher and stepdaughter Christal Reynolds. 

Erwin is survived by his cherished children and stepchildren: Theresa Tompach, Joseph (Shannon) Bircher, Mariann (Charles) Shelby, Laura Moskalick, Rob (Terese) Bircher, James Bircher, Jacob (Ruthie) Bircher, Amanda (Michael) Brown, Lorel Spears, Angel (Wally Coffman) Heranney, Becki (Bob) Kotynski, Bobby (Irma) Spears, Patricia (Noman) Yousaf, Ralph (Kristi) Spears, Mark (Janelys) Taylor and Matt (Jennifer) Taylor.

Erwin is also survived by his 43 grandchildren: Nicholas Smith, Kaitlyn Smith, Delaney (Jordan) Combs, Emily Smith, Grace (Dylan) Ramers, Ella Tompach, Jenna Bircher, Victoria Mirresso, Maddie (Gavin) Davis, Gabbie Hernandez, Michael Bircher, Justin Bircher, Jess (Chris) Bryan, Jon Baldridge, Andrew Heranney, Paul Young, Beth (Aaron) Ewing, James (Kelly) Young, Kimberly (Ronald) Cadle, Seth Feeler, John (Mindi) Kotynski, Selena (Junior) Medel, Alex Carrillo, Bobby Spears III, Arianna Spears, Brandon Spears, Jason Sifuentes, James Sifuentes, Carol Sifuentes, Cayla Sifuentes, Jordan Sifuentes, Charles Garret, Ralph C. Spears Jr., Autumn Spears, Ryan Bircher, Jeremiah Helenhouse, Jennifer Scott, Maddie Bircher, Bella Brown and Bria Brown; and 18 great-grandchildren: Charlotte Bryan, Milo Baldridge, Hannah Ewing, Lucas Ewing, Benjamin Young, Daniel Young, Mason Cadle, Andrea Cadle, Colton Cadle, Rayah Helenhouse, Blake Helenhouse, Bailey Helenhouse, Oliver Scott, Ryder Scott, Lauren Taylor, Kylie Taylor, Cameron Taylor, Tyson Taylor and Brayden Taylor.

Family and friends are invited to come together to honor and remember a remarkable man who touched the lives of many on Friday, March 15, 2024 directly at Valley Baptist Church: 255 Rigg Road, Valparaiso, IN 46383 with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by a 12:00 noon service and Military Honors.

Erwin honorably served in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1971 and retired in 2015 after 44 proud years of service with Arcelor Mittal at the IH7 Blast Furnace. He was a Soccer Official with LCSA and PCSA for 40 years and a Lake and Porter County High School Soccer Assigner for 20 years. Erwin was also a Softball and Basketball Official for 20 years.

Erwin will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, his dedication to his work, and his honorable service to his country. He leaves behind a void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
