Sam Papa, age 86, of Lansing, Illinois, formerly of Calumet City passed away October 8, 2017. He was born July 30, 1931 in Hammond, Louisiana to the late Sam and Rose Papa. Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Patricia (nee Magdziarz); cherished children: Sharon (Frank) Strzelecki, Ken (Kim), Janice (Late Perry) Krebs, Steve, and Dave (Catherine); 7 adored grandchildren; 3 precious great grand-daughters; dear sister Anna Mae (Leon) Gamblin; fond sister-in-law Joanne Papa; many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Jack (Roxie) and Joe; sisters: Josephine (Hugh) Markward and Rose Marie.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. from Castle Hill Funeral Home: 248 155th Place, Calumet City, IL 60409 to St. Victor Church for a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial followed by Interment Services and Military Honors at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
Sam honorably served in the United States Navy and retired as a salesman from Data Forms in Chicago. He had previously worked at Verson All Steel Press and Swift & Co. Sam's family and faith were very important to him. He was a patient, caring man who was always willing to help others. Sam was a member and volunteered for many organizations including as a Data Processing Management Association Officer, served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Victor Church, to the homebound and at St. Margaret Mercy in Hammond, was an AARP Tax Volunteer in Lansing for many years and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post #330 where he held offices as the Graves Registrar and Constitution and By-Laws. Sam was recognized for having donated 11 gallons of blood over the years and organized several blood drives at the American Legion in Calumet City. Sam and Pat traveled to all 50 states over the years and went to Rome for their 50th wedding anniversary. The Honor Flight on August 9, 2017 was one of the highlights of his life as he enjoyed the trip immensely.
